11 Colleges That Do Not Require SAT Test Scores For Admission
More and more top universities have stopped requiring incoming students to submit SAT scores, according to Newsweek. Although the standardized test used to be one of the key factors in determining admission, its popularity among competitive institutions has started to wane -- many of these schools accept one or a combination of ACT, AP, IB or SAT subject tests and some have chosen to become completely test-optional.
Although initially introduced as a means of providing all applicants an equal shot at being accepted, some universities believe the SAT's democratic goals have gone awry. Students have to pay a fee to take it, and those who can afford to usually enroll in expensive prep courses or hire a private tutor. A number of researchers have concluded that a student's high school GPA is as good an indicator of performance in college as the SAT.
Some institutions, like Wake Forest University, found that dropping the SAT requirement increased their student body's diversity -- the percentage of undergraduate minority students rose from 18 to 23 percent once Wake Forest joined the ranks of SAT-free schools.
According to the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, at least 775 American colleges and universities are now test optional. Below, check out eleven competitive institutions where most -- if not all -- standardized tests are not required for admission.

Highly Educated Less Likely To Be Unemployed

Government data suggest that education is increasingly crucial in protecting workers from unemployment.
The difference in joblessness between the country's least educated people and most educated people increased during the recession, according to statistics from the Labor Department. People without a high school diploma remain more than three times as likely to be unemployed than are college graduates.
The increases in the unemployment rate, from December 2007 through August:
- 7.8 percent to 14 percent for people who did not graduate from high school
- 4.7 percent to 10.3 percent for those with just a high school diploma
- 3.9 percent to 8.7 percent for people with some college
- 2.1 percent to 4.6 percent for those with bachelor's or more advanced degrees

A pint before the meal keeps the portions downIn what could fairly be called a watershed moment, scientists have confirmed that drinking water before a meal helps shed the pounds. Yup, it's that simple. And you don't even have to buy the book. In clinical trials, US researchers found that drinking a pint of water before a meal leads to weight loss. Dr Brenda Davy, an associate professor in human nutrition, who led the study said: "We found in earlier studies that middle aged and older people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal
ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during that meal. "In this recent study, we found that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day,
lost about 5 pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake." "People should drink more water and less sugary, high-calorie drinks. It's a simple way to facilitate weight management," Dr Davy added. While drinking water to lose weight is very much common sense,
Dr Davy said that there has been little scientific information on this topic. Previous studies have suggested that drinking water before meals reduces calorie intake, but according to Dr Davy this is the first randomised controlled clinica trial to show that increasing the amount of water that you drink water is an effective way to lose weight. The study tracked the weight of 48 adults aged 55 to 75, who were separated into two groups. The first group drank two cups of water before meals and the second group did not. All of the subjects ate a low-calorie diet
during the study. Over the course of 12 weeks, the water drinkers lost around 15.5 pounds, while the non-water drinkers lost around 11 pounds. Dr Davy said water may be so effective simply because it fills up the stomach and has no calories, so that people feel full quicker and eat less during meals. She also added that replacing diet colas and other artificially sweetened drinks with water also helps to cut calories, and aids weight loss.

It is not the Amount that Matters but the Thought Many years ago my wife and I were on a trip to Carmel, California for some shopping and exploring. On the way we stopped at a service station. As soon as we parked our car in front of the pumps, a young man, about eighteen or nineteen, came bouncing out to the car and with a big smile said, "Can I help you?"
"Yes," I answered. "A full tank of gas, please." I wasn't prepared for what followed. In this day and age of self-service and deteriorating customer treatment, this young man checked every tire, washed every window - even the sunroof - singing and whistling the whole time. We couldn't believe both the quality of service and his upbeat attitude about his work.
When he brought the bill I said to the young man, "Hey, you really have taken good care of us. I appreciate it."
He replied, "I really enjoy working. It's fun for me and I get to meet nice people like you."
This kid was really something!
I said, "We're on our way to Carmel and we want to get some milkshakes. Can you tell us where we can find the nearest Baskin-Robbins?"
"Baskin-Robbins is just a few blocks away," he said as he gave us exact directions. Then he added, "Don't park out front - park around to the side so your car won't get sideswiped."
What a kid!
As we got to the ice cream store we ordered milkshakes, except that instead of two, we ordered three. Then we drove back to the station. Our young friend dashed out to greet us. "Hey, I see you got your milkshakes."
"Yes, and this one is for you!"
His mouth fell open. "For me?"
"Sure. With all the fantastic service you gave us, I couldn't leave you out of the milkshake deal."
"Wow!" was his astonished reply.
As we drove off I could see him in my rear-view mirror just standing there, grinning from ear to ear.
Now, what did this little act of generosity cost me? Only about two dollars - you see, it's not the money, it's the consideration.
Well, I must have been feeling especially creative that day, so on our arrival in Carmel I drove directly to a flower shop. As we walked inside I said to the florist, "I need a long-stemmed rose for my wife to carry while we go shopping in Carmel."
The florist, a rather unromantic type, replied, "We sell them by the dozen."
"I don't need a dozen," I said, "just one."
"Well," he replied haughtily, "if you only want one it will cost you two dollars."
"Wonderful," I exclaimed. "There's nothing worse than a cheap rose."
Selecting the rose with some deliberation, I handed it to my wife. She was impressed! And the cost? Two dollars. Just two dollars. A bit later she looked up and said, "I must be the only woman in Carmel today carrying a rose." And I believe she probably was.
Can you imagine the opportunity to create magic with those around you, and all for the cost of a few dollars, some imagination and care?
Remember, it is not the amount that matters but the thought and care that often has the greatest impact upon those you love.
The small details of our lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, the property, the bank balance that matters. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse's friend and do those little things for each other that build a relationship.
The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up...
Live like a Candle Which Burns It self but Give Lights to Others.
Live amongst people in such a manner that if you die they weep over you and if you are alive they crave for your company.
